As another season of melting snow and rain is upon us, water damage prevention is a huge factor in having a hassle free spring.  According the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, floods cause over $5 billion in damage each year.  This makes floods the number one cause of severe-weather damage in the U.S. each year.  These nine tips should aid in your mission to prevent water damage.

1.  Be sure that floor drains and plumbing systems are operating correctly and clear from any obstructing objects.

2.  Make sure shut-off valves are clearly labeled in case of a plumbing leak.

3.  Find and fix all leaks and cracks in objects such as:  windows, doors, roof, foundation, exterior walls, and plumbing systems.

4.  Use water-proof sealant on the inside of your foundation and then apply it to the outside when all the snow is melted.

5.  Make sure your sump pump is working correctly and install a battery operated backup in case of a power outage.

6.  Keep all of your personal items in water-tight, plastic storage bags when storing them in your basement.

7.  Try to refrain from using permanently fitted carpets in your basement; instead use large carpet pieces or rugs.

8.  Protect your furniture, appliances, and exercise equipment by covering them with large, sealed plastic bags.

9.  Elevate electrical components at least one inch above the floor.

Remember, dwelling policies do not cover floods.  So if you would like to get flood insurance and be covered against flood damage, call Associated Insurance Agency or check out our website for a quote!
